Our Kitchen

Superstars!

Our kitchen ladies are truly amazing!  The Dream Team (Mrs Owen, Mrs Mayes and Mrs Wheeler) work so hard to make sure that the meals on offer each day are super-delicious and super-nutritious. They prepare and serve around 750 meals a week, including for staff – that’s how popular their cooking is! Look out for the Lunch Specials that are laid on throughout the year.

There is always a wide choice available that includes a hot meal, a cold meal from the salad bar and a (very popular) packed lunch option. Why wouldn’t you?

Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2

Universal Free School Meals

All children who are in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 are offered a free school lunch.  These are called Universal Free School Meals, and all Infant children are automatically entitled to them without their parents having to fill in any forms.  The Government pays the school for the meals that are eaten.

‘Ordinary’ Free School Meals

In addition, children of any age are entitled to free school meals if their parent receives:

  • Universal Credit with an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400
  • Income Support
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • support under Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • the guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
  • Child Tax Credit (with no Working Tax Credit) with an annual income of no more than £16,190)

For each child who is registered for this sort of free school meals, the Government pays for meals that are eaten AND, whether or not the child has school dinners, we receive £1,455 to spend on supporting children’s learning in and out of the classroom.  At Roydon we use this money to pay for some of our teaching assistants, resources, outdoor play equipment, toast, etc., etc.

However, for us to receive the £1,455, parents who receive any of the benefits above must register their claim by applying online through the Norfolk County Council website, or by sending off the attached form.  Unfortunately, some parents haven’t registered because their child is entitled to Universal Free School Meals anyway.

If you receive any of these benefits, please do complete the form, even though your child will continue to receive their Universal Free School Meal, or even if you choose to send your child with a packed lunch from home.  They don’t have to eat the meals for us to receive the £1,455.

The information you provide in the form will be used by the council to confirm receipt of one of the listed benefits.  You only need to complete this form once and it will last for the duration of your child’s time at Roydon.

  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
